DLL files in a.. Apparently this works just fine with XPpro. Does anyone know why XPe is behaving differently than standard XP in this regard? Is there a missing registry entry that controls this? Some printer drivers require the Help support be added to the image. It is an old issue that was discussed on the newsgroups, but I don't know if the simple solution was ever posted on the forums. The basic solution was to add Windows help:. I'm using their latest 8.
My product is an appliance, so there is no need for the help engine. Why do you ask? Is it a necessary component for certain applications? The real question is one of search paths, I think. Apparently XPpro does. I assume there's a registry entry somewhere that should tell PnP where to look, and that for reasons unknown that entry is not set correctly in XPe. But I'd still like to know why the original mechanism fails.
I have the same problem with the search path not looking in the proper location in the DRVSTORE where misc files are located usually within subdirectories. So is there another way to solve this other than adding the help subsystem in place since I would like to fix this on fielded units? In my case I looked in setupapi. That solved the problem for me, as I mentioned above. But it's a workaround, and no one seemingly can explain why the XPpro mechanism works and it fails with XPe.
In the field, you could create a batch file or script to simply copy the files from one place to another. Here's the batch file I used:. The following thread has a lot of discussion regarding this issue:.

And of course the VM files. The log files in the system32 folder can be disabled, read the announcement for how. You can also remove them manually, it's just some debugging info they forgot to turn off. Comment from Dave Time October 1, at pm.
Glad I checked this out before I filled my entire 1 Terabyte driive with compressed files. Only one folder copied over before I realized the mistake. Thanks to You Uncompressed speeds things up too. One little check box — Damn! Comment from Red Time January 13, at pm. I have the same blue file name problem as the others in here, however, I never changed the settings to do this. Every file and folder on my system is blue, and I notice the check box is checked to compress. Again, I never elected to do this.

If I copy blue files onto another hard drive, will they still be compressed? I need to move them from an XP computer to a Windows 7 computer, and many necessary data files are in Program Files or Documents and Settings. Comment from Andy Rathbone Time May 10, at am. Dave: The answer depends on how your new PC is set up. Try copying one file over and see if it stays compressed blue. That will give you the answer. Comment from Lisa Time July 31, at pm. The 2nd solution helped me with the folder options.
Funny how a little thing like different colored files can drive someone bananas. Comment from Asim Time August 13, at am. Comment from nura Time August 14, at pm.
