Flamethrower turrets are very powerful because biters and spitters do not have fire resistance and the total damage dealt to ignited enemies is a guaranteed death sentence for almost anything in the game. An enemy unit is ignited if it is hit directly by a flame stream. Flamethrower turrets will target the closest non ignited enemy and then once all enemies within range are ignited they will target the closest enemy.

The bonus technologies and fuel damage bonus for the flamethrower turret improve the contact damage and damage dealt by fire on the ground.

The bonus technologies also affect the damage dealt to ignited enemies, which lasts 30 seconds and deals damage per second without upgrades. As such, the ward keyword is my favorite new thing of late. It provides a downside to removal spells that can prove telling but is not complete, and which can be both built around by the controller and played around by the opponent. Since the Sculptor lacks an evasive ability, opponents do have a range of options for dealing with him, but you might be forcing their hand.

Flamethrower Sonata is well-used when setting up a future Torrent Sculptor, though each face is definitely playable without the other. Torrent Sculptor has what appears to be the new idea for a keyword protective ability: ward, which counters attempts to target it and helps to provide some shielding against kill spells and annoying abilities.

If you discard a big card, this will take something out in a reasonable time frame. As the sole card in your hand, you can cast this side since the discard is not a cost , but blue usually has enough card draw to make this far less necessary.

In all, this card makes for a functional, interesting part to a deck type that sometimes can struggle to generate board presence. Constructed: 3.
